3D, Scenic, & Prop Design Samples

Project:
Devil Head Doorway Entrance

  • Skills: Foam Sculpting, Clay Foam Sculpting, Scenic Painting, and (VERY) Basic LED Lighting

  • Task: Assist with creating decorations for a friend's Halloween party. The basement was "hell" themed with a desired carnival or old school Coney Island funhouse type of entrance vibe.

  • Process: With the desired size in mind and image references, the initial design was sketched into pink insulation foam. An additional layer for the nose was sculpted and attached. Air-drying foam clay was used for additional fatty build-up around the nose, lips, and eye cavities. The eyes were created by cutting the openings out of the insulation foam, adding a layer of milky and partially opaque stencil sheets in place. They were then lined with whiteish/yellow LED lights to make them pop, especially at night. The pupils were created by using half pieces of clear ornaments, painting the interior, shoving red cellophane inside, and adding red LEDs along the outer edges. HH was carved into the forehead as a callback to the party's location (Height's House is what it became known as in the friend group.)

Project:
Escape Room Scenic Props & Theming

  • Skills: Scenic Painting, Weathering, Foam Sculpting, Thermoplastic Molding & Sculpting

  • Task: Assist in creating immersive spaces and props for a pirate tomb-themed escape room.

  • Processes: (Click Images for More Info)

While I currently have no ✨formal✨ training in scenic creation, I am actively taking steps to gain knowledge and experience in the field. By completeing the following projects, I had been able to achieve a sense of purpose and pride unlike any I have felt before. Through getting a taste of the (self-taught/youtube tutorials) skills used to complete these projects, I have grown a hunger and desire to properly learn from industry mentors, get hands-on experience, and make some really cool sets for theme parks, escape rooms, parties, museums, and other themed experiences! :3

Scenic Decor

Project:
Mounted Godzilla Head

  • Skills: Foam sculpting using hot knife and hot wire, mounting, and painting.

  • Task: Create a cool kaiju-themed decoration for a backyard music fest.

  • Process:

The Why: This Godzilla project is my first-ever foam build. The actual build of the project is scaled down from the initial idea that I had wanted to execute. My family was hosting a kaiju-themed backyard party.  I originally wanted to have this look like Godzilla was bursting out of the back of our home. Due to time restraints (I was also working a completely separate full-time job while building this), budget restraints, and severely underestimating the work that had to be done, I went with the mounted head instead.

The Build: The main head consists of 3 separate pieces. After stacking 6 layers of insulation foam, the base shapes were chiseled out of the foam blocks. The snout and jaw pieces are stacked together using PVC pipes. Additional PVC pipes were used to attach the snout to the main headpiece. Once assembled, smoother carving and finer detailing steps were able to be completed. The teeth are more foam blocks carved with a potato peeler. The gums were created with spray foam and then shaved down with the peeler. This was able to give the teeth a nice "protruding" sense. With all the foam pieces completed, I was able to move into the painting step. For final touches, a portable RGB LED light strip was added to the mouth to give Godzilla's laser beam effect. At the event, this piece had theatrical lighting and fog-machine effects to enhance the final experience.

ScenE & Prop 3d Modeling

Personal Projects:
3D Modeling Practice Based on Existing Art

  • Software Used: Autodesk Maya & Zbrush

  • Skills: 3D Modeling (Low Poly & High Poly)

  • Task: To practice modeling and train my eyes to be able to see and translate 2D images to 3D layouts. I wish I had more to show, but my old hard drive got corrupted. I will probably revisit these projects and recreate them in Blender in the near future to push and practice lighting and texturing in 3D engines!
